Self-Identity ~ YMIU

It fascinates me how grownups (pronounced wisely by a toddler as “grumps”) so consistently miss the insights and wisdom provided by children on a daily basis. Frankly, I find it ironic that the revelation of ‘The Secret‘ that underlying Universal Laws, like the Law of Attraction, allow us to create the lives we experience comes as such a BIG SURPRISE. After all, our kids make that obvious on a regular basis… if we’d only pay attention.

Several years back I was listening to a group of preschoolers creating a game of ‘pretend’. As they were dickering over who would be playing which roles, a persistent, almost 3-year-old, Felicia, eager to be included but not quite understanding the ‘game’, kept asking WHO she could be and WHY.

The 4′s and 5′s, passionately engrossed in the beginning of this day’s creation, were blissfully ignoring Felicia. When Felicia finally erupted into tears the ever-patient 4-year-old Josh turned her way and said, “Felicia, you’re going to be you!”

Her puzzled reply was, “Why am I you?!?”

“No, not me… YOU“, said Josh. Because I was constantly surrounded by short people I had arranged a number of mirrors throughout the house, all at a child’s level. Felicia promptly turned around, looked into the mirror and asked herself the same question…

“Why Am I You?”

It was a great question… a valuable question… in fact, it’s your answer to the question, Y M I U that has you experiencing whatever it is you’re experiencing! But I digress… the really amazing part of this story came when Josh looked at his friend in that mirror and said,

“Because you get to make it up as you go. We need you to surprise us!”

Did you catch that?

YOU GET TO MAKE IT UP AS YOU GO. I have a newsflash… We’ve never quit ‘playing pretend‘… we just started taking ourselves too seriously!
