What Super Powers would YOU choose?

Posted by: Mary K | Comments (0)

Why not let the kid in you choose?

I have a fun little book of Psychology Tests for Kids. It contains 40 interesting “tests” that have been ‘field-tested’ in real groups and classes with real children yet they’re not meant to be statistically significant and in no way are meant to be interpreted as the last word on a particular child’s ability.

That said… they are fun and allow for self-discovery. I think all of us can enjoy learning about ourselves so I thought it would be fun to periodically give you an opportunity to ‘test’ yourself!

Ponder the list of Super-Powers below and select the one or two that tug at you the most. The ones that really put a grin on your face are a good bet. Then you can click to discover what that might say about YOU! ;-)

What’s your style? Superhero

Posted by: Mary K | Comments (1)

If you chose flying…

Perhaps you like to see the “big picture” of life and how things fit together. Little details may annoy you. You probably enjoy being free and taking risks.

CAREER CLUES: You’d probably make a good pilot or astronaut. Or consider working with big, sweeping ideas that will make a difference in the world. Look for a job that will let you affect policies, maybe in government or a public research group. Avoid getting tied down.

If you chose time travel…

You may be interested in the causes of things and honw past mistakes can be used to shape the future. You’re probably very curious about how different people live.

CAREER CLUES: A career in scientific research, history, or human behavior might be the place for you. You might enjoy a job where you can affect the future.

If you chose invisibility…

You may be shy, or you may be a very keen observer. Or you may be both. Perhaps you like to know everything that is going on around you.

CAREER CLUES: Some good careers for observers are writer, artist, or private investigator. (Remember: Encyclopedia Brown started young!)

If you chose X-ray vision…

Perhaps you like to “see through” problems and go to the heart of an issue. You might enjoy finding problems that other people can’t even see. You also might enjoy solving problems.

CAREER CLUES: Physics, politics, math and medicine are fields that need skilled problem-solvers.

If you chose the power to change forms…

You may be a sociable person who likes to “fit in”. Perhaps you want to be admired by the group. Maybe you’re a real crowd-pleaser!

CAREER CLUES: Entertainment might be the field for you. Actors can “change forms” and be other people.

If you chose mind reading…

You’re probably good at guessing what other people think. Perhaps you can “see behind” what they’re saying to what they’re really thinking or feeling.

CAREER CLUES: You might be a good counselor or psychologist. It’s important for professionals in those careers to understand how other people think and feel.

If you chose seeing into the future…

You’re probably very creative and love adventure. You’d move right into the future if you could! Perhaps you’re always looking at what might be possible, and wondering how to make it happen sooner.

CAREER CLUES: A career on the cutting edge of things might be right for you. Think about becoming an explorer, research scientist, inventor, or science fiction writer.

If you chose “super hearing”…

You probably pay close attention to sounds and patterns. You may like to be fully informed about the latest news. Maybe you’re even nosy?

CAREER CLUES: You might make an excellent reporter or gossip columnist. Or you might decide to become a musician.

  • Write a story about yourself. In the story give yourself the two Super-Powers you chose. What would you do? Where would you go? What, if anything, would you change about the world?
  • Ask a friend to choose two Super-Powers. Spend an afternoon together pretending you have those powers. Can you use your special powers to help each other? Try writing a skit and performing it for your family or classmates.

More Than Make-believe

Everything you’re interested in, every choice you make, tells you something about yourself. But you have to think about your choices to understand what they mean.

The special powers listed can be more than make- believe. You can be invisible by being quiet and listening. You can read other people’s minds by listening and being compassionate. You can fly by going beyond your expectations.

What other ways can you make these Super-Powers come true for you?

Science of ‘Making it Up’

Posted by: Mary K | Comments (1)

On Sunday I listened to an amazing conversation between Jennifer McLean, HealingRelease.com and Gregg Braden, author of several books including The Spontaneous Healing of Belief. Braden is considered a scientist, visionary and scholar… and while this particular conversation is no longer currently available… if you have any interest in the science of spirit and it’s inter-relationship with our physical universe, you might find him an interesting… even inspiring, resource.

I have to confess, I’ve spent most of my life in the joy and perplexity of trying to ‘figure out’ how everything ‘works’… so the conversation was particularly amazing to me because because I heard… and felt… the penny drop, as my grandmother would say.

MAGNETS AND ELECTRICITY

The spinning of the electrons around the nucleus of an atom creates a tiny magnetic field. Most objects are not magnetic because the atoms are arranged so that the electrons spin in different, random directions, and cancel out each other.

Magnets are different; the molecules in magnets are arranged so that the electrons spin in the same direction. This arrangement of atoms creates two poles in a magnet, a North-seeking pole and a South-seeking pole.

Bar Magnet

A magnet is labeled with North (N) and South (S) poles. The magnetic force in a magnet flows from the North pole to the South pole. This creates a magnetic field around a magnet.

Have you ever held two magnets close to each other? They don’t act like most objects. If you try to push the South poles together, they repel each other. Two North poles also repel each other.

Turn one magnet around and the North (N) and the South (S) poles are attracted to each other. The magnets come together with a strong force. Just like protons and electrons, opposites attract.

These special properties of magnets can be used to make electricity. Moving magnetic fields can pull and push electrons. Some metals, like copper have electrons that are loosely held. They can be pushed from their shells by moving magnets. Magnets and wire are used together in electric generators.
